Independent Study

Although nothing replaces actually being in class, independent study allows students to do class assignments when it is necessary for them to miss three days of school or more. Hence, the student is kept more current on daily assignments and there is less time spent on catching him/her up when returning to school. According to GUSD Board Policy 6158 short term independent study in grades TK-12, shall be for a minimum of no less than 3 days and no more than 14 days. In cases of emergency, where the absence from school is requested to extend beyond 14 days, the parent/guardian is required to contact the school to explain the reason for the extended absence or student may be dropped from school. In order to participate in an Independent Study program, the parent/guardian must give the school a minimum of two (2) weeks advance notice.

Assignments are due within one week of student returning to school unless an exception is granted by teacher/principal.

Approval of a parent's request for an Independent Study program is based on evidence that the student can work independently and an indication that the student will complete assigned work. The school is required to maintain records for each student participating in this program, including copies of all completed and evaluated student work. The student, parent, teacher and principal must sign an agreement. Most students with IEPs may NOT participate in the Independent Study program. Please see your child's teacher or an administrator for details.
